Bad Apple - A Short Film Production (MCM 216 Project)
SCENE 1
HOUSE PARTY - NIGHT
FELICIA is at a house party with friends BUJU, KUSH, and PENNY. They’re seated on a large couch where three others are drinking and getting high. The place is dark and becoming scanty as they leave to their various homes. As the place becomes empty, BUJU and KUSH mingle with the small crowd remaining and then come back with two other friends.
FELICIA:
(Yawns) This party is pretty much over. I want to go home.
PENNY:
(Lays down on FEL’s laps) Same here, girl.
BUJU
and KUSH come back with two mysterious guys.
BUJU:
Ayo! Would like you guys to meet my guys FRANCIS and DAVE, y’nahh’m sayin.
PENNY:
(Looks lustfully at FRANK) H-hi.
FRANCIS:
(Sits next to her) What’s good? Pretty girl like you sitting here on your own
without any company…doesn’t seem fair does it?
FEL:
Hello? I’m literally right here…
FRANCIS:
Chill babe…I see you
They
have a light argument. Cut to KUSH and DAVE who are standing a few feet away,
having a discrete discussion.
KUSH:
Yo DAVE, give me some of that…(whispers in his ear).
DAVE:
You want that laced?
KUSH:
You know what I like (they laugh)
DAVE:
I got some on my right now, matter of fact. (Brings out drugs from his pocket)
KUSH:
Niiiiice.
They
roll up a joint and smoke.
BUJU:
Nah, don’t telling me you’r blazing up without me. You’re not friends, for
real.
KUSH:
Nah, this is the special kind. You know how I role mehhhn. No snow, no blow.
BUJU:
You’re not the only one who can handle the cold. Gimme some of that.
FRANCIS:
Same here.
KUSH:
(Shrugs and looks to DAVE) Aiite.
DAVE:
I’m on it.
PENNY:
Don’t forget me! (Giggles childishly)
FEL:
(Gasps) Since when?!
PENNY:
Babe, you need to live a little you know. Have some fun.
FRANCIS:
She’s damn right. Better listen to her, that’s a good one right there.
FEL:
Abeg shut up jor!
FRANCIS:
Shii mehn, just sayin.
FEL:
I’m actually really disappointed in you, Penny. I thought you were different.
The only one keeping me afloat in this group.
PENNY:
(To KUSH) Chill. (Takes his blunt and makes a long, hard drag. To FEL) You can
judge all you want, but we’re all the same.
DAVE
brings all kinds of drugs and drinks for them to have fun with. They get drunk
and high except for FEL.
SCENE 2
FELICIA’S
HOME - NIGHT
FELICIA
and her parents are seated in the living room as though they were having a
family meeting. MOM holds her results. The camera pans over the grades. Some
As, mostly Bs and two carryovers. DAD is seated opposite them, looking morose
and disappointed.
FEL:
I swear, I can explain.
MOM:
You were the last person I could ever expect this from. Felicia Monty, what is
this? No just look at this! Two carryovers? A scholarship student? Your CGPA
right now is in hell!
FEL:
Mummy, please!
DAD:
Honey, calm down. (To FEL) Tell me, what’s been going on with you. We’re your
parents…speak to us.
FEL:
(Looks to MOM) Apparently not.
DAD:
You’ve been distant lately. Going out- to parties, I guess.
FEL:
I told you, I come home late because I’m in the library…you know, studying.
MOM:
Come, do you think we are stupid? Abi we are just mumus that you can just
deceive? We were once 19, Miss Felicia. We know what you’ve been doing, don’t
lie to me!
DAD:
(Gestures to MOM to calm down. To FEL) Look, nobody that is spending hours in
the library studying would come home with this disastrous result. Tell me,
what’s bee going on with you?
MOM:
Leave her! Is it not those her rubbish friends that carrying her around. You
will not have sense abi? (Moves to slap her and twist her ear) You will not
have sense! I will deal with you, this girl!
DAD:
(Separates them, calms them down) Your mum is right. We know you’re a good
girl, that’s why we are so disappointed in you. It’s not just the grades…it’s
your behavior. Baby, youre changing. Not in a good way.
FEL:
(Crying) You wouldn’t understand.
DAD:
We just want to advice you. No matter how good and pius you think you are, if
you’re around the wrong people they will destroy you. Even the Bible says evil
communication corrupts good minds. One bad apple can spoil the whole basket of
fruit. Be wise, my girl. Remember, this is not who you are. There is still an
opportunity for change.
MOM:
Don’t mind this stupid-
DAD:
Aye! Leave her be. Let’s just leave her
alone to think…
MOM:
Better use your brain oh…better catch sense, this one that your brain is
touching
DAD pulls her out of the room and
they leave FEL alone. Camera zooms in on FEL who is crying. Her phone rings,
it’s PENNY.
FEL:
Hello?
PENNY:
Babe, you don’t sound too good. What’s wrong?
FEL:
My parents…..(sobs)
PENNY:
Don’t worry. I’m coming over to pick you up. I have something that’s going to
make you feel better.
Fade
out.
SCENE 3

NIGHT

and smoking and drinking. Just getting
maxed out. She binge drinks until she falls unconscious. MOM barges in.
MOM:
Didn’t I ask you to wash the plates- Oh my God! Felicia! What have you done to
yourself? What have you done? (Runs to her and tries to wake her up)
DAD rushes in screaming. They get
her out of bed so they can rush her to the hospital.
Fade
out
SCENE 4
Hospital – Waiting Room
- DAY
MOM
is in fervent prayer while DAD paces back and forth. The DOCTOR walks in.
DAD:
Doctor! Please tell me my girl is okay…
MOM:
(Sees the DOCTOR, starts crying) Oh, Felicia. Why?
DOCTOR:
She’s…well, she’s suffered some organ failure.
DAD:
No…
MOM:
Heeeeyyyy!!! It is over! It is over for me oh!
DOCTOR:
Kidneys, to be exact. We’ll need to find a donor.
MOM:
Try me! No be two kidney I get?
DOCTOR:
We’ll have to test you first to see if you’re a match for her.
MOM:
And if she’s not?
DAD:
Then you can see if I’ll be a match for her.
DOCTOR:
Alright, just wait here. I’ll get my nurses to take you to the lab.
DOCTOR exits. They continue their
prayers.
Fade
out.
SCENE 5
Hospital Ward-
FELICIA’S room - DAY
FELICIA
looks extremely misshapen. Her parents are on either side of the bed, waiting
for her to wake up. The DOCTOR walks in as she opens her eyes and sits up,
showing that she has a substantial amount of physical strength.
DOCTOR:
(To parents) How is she doing now?
FELCIA:
(Whimpers) Not too great but I’m holding on.
MOM:
Ah! Thank God. You’re awake.
DOCTOR:
Good to see the surgery was a success. Sir, you really saved your daughter’s
life.
DAD:
No, I give all credit to God. Thank you, for all your efforts. She wouldn’t be
here today if not for your acuity.
DOCTOR:
All the substances she took nearly destroyed her organs. It’s a miracle that
she’s alive. Anyway, I’ll let you have some alone time with your daughter.
DOCTOR exits
MOM:
(To FEL) Baby, how did we get here?
FEL:
I don’t want to talk about it, mum. You’ve asked me several times-
MOM:
Because I need an answer!
DAD:
(Places a hand on MOM’S shoulder) Please. (To FEL) Look, you’re going to rehab.
There’s no other way around it.
FEL:
I agree. In fact, I would’ve even suggested it myself (pauses). You’re right,
you’re always right. And I should’ve listened to you two a long time ago when I
still thought I could go about doing whatever I wanted without any
consequences. It started with my friend, Penny. At first I thought she was
smart and quiet- focused on her studies. In my head, we could study together
and be buddies for projects and assignments. She proved me wrong…at first I was
telling the truth when I said I was going to the library. But soon, the library
became parties, clubs, raiding and robbing shops… (turns away and cries). I’m
sorry, Im just as disappointed in myself as you are in me…I thought if I was
strong-willed, they wouldn’t get to me, but they did. Next thing you know, I was doing whatever they were doing to cope
with stress and confusion.
MOM:
(Also crying) I told you….I warned you. We both did.
DAD:
Well, we are here today. Nothing we can do about the past, now. You know I will
always tell you, there is still a chance to change. As long as you’re still
breathing, you are not and can never be hopeless.
MOM:
Hmm…so, do you agree to go to rehab.
FEL:
Yes, I agree. Thanks for saving my life. I love you Mummy. I love you, Daddy.
MOM
and DAD: We love you too.
